The Second World War - Chronology Day by Day- July 1940 - November 1941

JULY- 1940

1st- The Germans occupy the Channel Islands. Mussolini appoints Marshal Graziani as commander in Libya. Italian planes bomb Malta. The German corsair Penguin begins his activity in the Atlantic. Holland: Westerbork refugee camp is transformed into a concentration camp. Romania declares the end of the treaty of aid with England and asks Hitler to send troops and a treaty of Aid.

2- To avoid confronting Stalin, Hitler rejects Romania's offer. To the north of Ireland, a German submarine sinks the English transatlantic Andora Star, which transported German prisoners to Canada. Italian planes bomb Alexandria.

3- Operation Catapult: The English take over French ships parked in English ports. Atlantic: Battle of the OA178 convoy, the German air force sinks four cargo ships and damages nine.

4- The English fleet attacks the French ships stationed at the Mers-el-Kébir base: 1297 French officers and sailors die and many French warships are sunk. Vichy breaks off relations with London; French public opinion shows its indignation by demanding military measures from the Vichy government.
