JANUARY

1st- United States: Dr. Joseph Dejarnettes, director of Western Virginia Hospital, says that the state has sterilized more than 27,000 mentally ill people in the last 20 years; this program inspired the application of euthanasia in Germany. Brazil: Getulio Vargas proclaims the New State of fascist tendencies. USA: TIMES magazine chooses Adolf Hitler as "Man of the Year".

2-Spain: The Franco’s troops demolish the last republican defenses in Teruel. The Legion Condor bombs Barcelona. Bartomeu Rosselló-Pòrcel, Spanish writer, dies.

4- The Russians increase the railway lines to the east, concentrating powerful armored units on the border with Manchuria.

5- Great Britain decides to send to Palestine a technical commission in charge of studying the partition recommended by the Royal Commission. The new commission is chaired by Sir John Woodhead.

6-Spain: Italian aviation bombards Barcelona.

7- Spain: Italian aviation bombards Barcelona. USA: Priest Coughlin publishes the newspaper Social Justice, of fascist and anti-Semitic tendencies.

8- Spain: Colonel Domingo Rey d'Harcourt and the Francoist forces besieged in Teruel surrender to the Republicans. Italian aviation bombards Barcelona. Bizerta, Tunisia: nationalist demonstration and French repression.

9. Palestine: In collaboration with the secret army of the Zionist Agency (the Haganah), the English organize the Jewish Colony police, to fight the Palestinians.
