WHO GOVERNS DESTINY?
THE THESIS OF THE ONTOLOGICAL PRIMACY OF ORÍ
Orí, Odù, Freedom, and the Architecture of Existence in Yorùbá Philosophy and Candomblé
Who truly governs a person’s destiny?
Is it Orí? Is it Odù? Or is destiny shaped by the relationship between what we receive, the circumstances we encounter, and the choices we make?
In Who Governs Destiny?, Dofono de Laalu presents a philosophical investigation into one of the most profound questions surrounding Yorùbá thought and Candomblé: the relationship between Orí, Odù, destiny, freedom, and human responsibility.
If Odù reveals a person’s destiny, does it also determine that destiny?
If Orí is connected to individuality and the constitution of the person, what is its relationship with the configurations revealed through divination?
And if destiny can be strengthened, redirected, or confronted through Ẹbọ, Ìwà, Àṣẹ, and conscious action, where does freedom begin?
At the heart of this book is the author's philosophical proposition:
THE THESIS OF THE ONTOLOGICAL PRIMACY OF ORÍ
Orí possesses ontological primacy over individual existence because it is connected to the singular constitution of the person, while Odù possesses hermeneutic and divinatory primacy because it reveals, organizes, and interprets the configurations through which that existence may unfold.
