Instead, they unpacked into a system they did not know, in a language they did not speak, governed by rules they did not control.

Two international tennis professionals are arrested hours after a match in Brazil. What follows is a fourty-five day legal limbo where freedom exists only on paper.

The case had immediate legal, professional, and personal consequences for both players, including restrictions on liberty, prison, uncertainty regarding future tournaments, and emotional distress far from home.

The story traveled fast, crossing borders, waking families in Colombia, Venezuela, Spain, and beyond.

By the time dawn approached the southern coast of Brazil, the lives of two professional tennis players had already split into before and after.

Osvaldo Carlos Pereira Maia é o meu nome de batismo e o “apelido TETAZE” veio de infância, e segundo minha Mãe, meu irmão mais novo me chamava assim e o apelido pegou, e hoje o incorporei como um ‘pseudônimo’ nas minhas escritas; nasci em Porto Alegres, RS, vivi em Curitiba dos 10 aos 25 anos; Nos EUA vivi por um ano em 1985 e passei várias temporadas de dois a três meses entre a década de 80 e 2.000; também vivi temporadas na Argentina e Espanha, sempre a negócios e turismo; há 35 anos vivo em Santa Catarina, em Balneário Camboriú; tenho 65 anos, sou casado, advogado há 30 anos exercendo a profissão na área cível, empresarial Direito Internacional e comércio exterior, além de atuar como tradutor e intérprete de idiomas inglês e espanhol nas Comarcas judiciais de minha região; ah, e nas horas vagas escrevo minhas crônicas e memórias, e ‘bato um tênis’ nas quadras do meu Clube Itamirim na cidade de Itajaí, SC.
