JANUARY
1st- In 1917 the losses of Allied ships amounted to more than 6 million tons throughout the year. However, the losses had fallen to around 300,000 tons and would never return to the levels of the spring of 1917; it was then when the Allied losses came out of critical levels. Instead, the losses of U-boats increased alarmingly, and only in the last three months of 1917 were 61 submarines lost, almost half of the submarine fleet.

6- Brest-Litowsk: Negotiations between the Central Powers and Ukraine are formally initiated. Germany recognizes Finland's independence. Costa Rica: in the middle of the uprising against Dictator Pelico Tinoco; eruption of the Irazú volcano
7-The allies commit to delivering to Italy food and 690 tons of coal per month
