Every year, our Grade 9 Short Story Collection gives students the opportunity to discover what can happen when language and imagination come together. The 2026 edition celebrates the remarkable creativity of our students and reveals genuine talents for writing, as they experiment with literature and their own unique voices. This collection is also an invitation for students to develop a deeper relationship with the English language. Mastering a foreign language is not only about grammar, vocabulary, or accuracy; it is also about making that language your own. When students are given the freedom that literature provides—to imagine, create, take risks, and express themselves—they begin to see English not simply as a language they are learning, but as a language in which they can think, feel, and create.
This year, each writer was also responsible for translating their story into a visual form, creating an original illustration in collaboration with their Arts teacher. Using Styrofoam relief printmaking, students engraved their designs into foam plates, applied black ink or paint to the surface, and transferred the images onto paper—a form of relief printing commonly used to introduce students to printmaking. The result is a truly multidisciplinary project in which literature, language, and visual art meet, allowing each story to be told twice: once through words, and once through images.
