Synopsis

Claude Monet spent a lifetime learning how to see light. The Painter’s Palette: Claude Monet approaches his work through the colors, materials, places, and moments that shaped one of the most influential painters in modern art. Beginning with a richly documented account of Monet’s life—from Le Havre and the birth of Impressionism to Giverny, the Water Lilies, and the monumental decorations of the Orangerie—the book follows the development of his artistic vision across more than six decades. The biography is followed by thirty selected paintings, each presented as an individual study combining the work itself, its historical context, and a carefully extracted ten-color visual palette. Rather than treating Monet’s paintings simply as familiar masterpieces, the book examines how color, atmosphere, brushwork, reflection, changing light, and the passage of time shaped what he placed on canvas. Thirty paintings. Thirty palettes. One lifetime devoted to seeing.
